You could write the best resume in the world and be highly qualified for a job, but if your cover letter is poorly written, generic, or misguided, you can pretty much throw your chances out the window. The cover letter is your first, and sometimes your only opportunity to grab an employer’s attention and let them know why your resume is worth reading. There are many different ways to write a cover letter, depending on the employer and the method of submission.

Did you know that employers typically spend 10-20 seconds on their initial review of cover letters? Before writing the cover letter, update your resume. If you don’t have one, then write one and make your information on the resume pertinent to the position you are applying for. Be sure to list the strengths that will catch the employer’s eye and make you desirable as an employee.

Be sure to do your homework. Research the organization or business where you wish to be employed. For example, know the answers to these questions…
• Who is this employer? Who do they cater to? What is their target market?
• What are the company or organization’s values? Integrity, Customer Support, etc.?
• What is the history of the employer? Who was the founder? How has the business or organization evolved?
• Read the job description carefully. Determine your most important skills, qualifications and experience the employer is looking for and make sure you include it on your resume. The key is writing an effective resume is being focused and providing only pertinent information.
• Know the name of the manager you may work with. Use the internet and if this does not work, contact the HR department.

With the unemployment rate up into double digits, the job market is jammed with people fighting for the same position. In order to win, you have to be smart and prepared.
